Division I baseball is well underway and there has been plenty of excitement to see so far for fans of the game, ranging from no-hitter’s to upset victories and in-state rivals series sweeps.
And of course, now a few weeks into the season, a few teams have broken away from the pack and solidified themselves as the cream of the DI crop in 2020. According to d1baseball.com‘s latest top 25 rankings, Florida, Vanderbilt, Louisville, Georgia and Texas Tech are the top five teams in the nation for the second week in a row. But this is based solely on baseball ability, and the world is (maybe) dying to know if the realm of Twitter agrees with the NCAA higher-ups.
In all seriousness, the visibility of a school’s athletic program is at least somewhat important as it pertains to picking up new recruits and making it a desirable location to play. In a world dominated by college football, it is often difficult for baseball program’s to break out on the social scene. This post sets out to see who is thriving the most on twitter. To do that, I am taking a look at overall followers and user engagement of college baseball twitter accounts.
There are almost 300 DI baseball teams in the country, so for the sake of time I have analyzed the current top 10 teams to see if any reshuffling is in order. The rankings were determined by a combination of followers and engagement, and the team’s most viral tweet is included with the rankings. All analytics were collected courtesy of socialbearing.com, a free-to-use tool for mining social media. So, without further ado, here is the new top five DI rankings as presented by Twitter.
1 – Ole Miss
This may not come as a shock to fans of college baseball. Ole Miss is known for doing baseball better than just about anybody, regularly drawing enormous crowds and always staying competitive. They sold over 7,000 season tickets last year and maintain a fierce online presence, the best in the DI baseball business. Though they have just the second most followers (92,693) on Twitter, their user engagement is second to none, generating the most retweets and favorites of any team’s account so far in 2020. Their dominance of the online game is great for their program and they promise to make a serious push in the College World Series, currently ranked number nine in the country.
Here is their most viral tweet of the 2020 season, a motivational speech from their head coach that was shared heavily across the DI baseball scene.
2 – Florida
Florida has a ton going for it right now. They have sat at number one in the nation for two weeks in row, and according to my (super official) rankings they are also a threat on social media. They have the third most followers of the top 10 teams and they have put out the most popular tweet of the year so far among those teams. If they continue to play as well as they have they will only garner more attention online and across the country.
Their best tweet concerns the triumph over an in-state rival that may or may not be featured in just a moment…
3 – Vanderbilt
What more can you say about those Vandy boys? The reigning NCAA champs are playing top tier ball on the diamond and letting everybody on Twitter know about it. They have the most followers of any top 10 team (147,190) and they keep them well engaged.
Their best tweet comes off the heels of Sunday afternoon’s walk-off homerun, an electrifying moment that encapsulates the Vanderbilt baseball program.
4 – Miami
Okay, I may have spoiled this one. But even though a tweet about the Hurricanes losing is the most popular of the year to this point, Miami is no joke online. Despite only having 36,705 followers, their user engagement in terms of retweets and favorites is astounding, rivaling that of huge accounts like Vanderbilt.
This fact gets me excited because professional baseball in Florida has struggled for a long, long time (looking at you Marlins and Rays). The fact that two teams from the sunshine state are making some of the biggest waves on college baseball Twitter is a good sign for those hoping baseball can finally break through to the general Florida public.
Here’s their best tweet this season that was posted when they were ranked number one after opening weekend.
5 – Texas Tech
Not much changes for Texas Tech in these (extremely important) Twitter rankings, as they sit at number five both in real life and on social. This is a school in a huge state with a ton of baseball fans, and Texas Tech has successfully tapped into the fan-base with over 70,000 followers and a top tier engagement ranking. Perhaps that’s because the team is performing at an excellent level, or perhaps fans are looking for anything to distract them from the Houston Astros cheating scandal. Either way, Texas Tech is sitting pretty.
Here’s their best tweet of the season highlighting a number one ranking they received from Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. It may not be the official rankings, but in Texas, being the best in any capacity is the name of the game.
